Preliminary probe over threats to Matic continues

Acting on these reports, the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade, in cooperation with the police, found out that the direct death threat was sent by V.M., from Novi Sad.

Matic, answering the question of deputy Higher Public Prosecutor about whether he feels threatened, said he took the specific threat seriously and has reasons to be concerned both for his own safety and that of his family.

Given that the particular case was not isolated and that there are a number of threats against him, Matic said he believed that it was necessary to investigate any such threat, prosecute the perpetrators, and and publicly announce the court decisions in order to break the vicious cycle in which the threats are repeated with impunity.

Journalists and editors of B92 have been receiving threats for years. Some of them, based on the risk assessment provided by the state to the competent authorities, are under constant police protection.

New threats, which as a rule are legally qualified as threats to security and carry the penalty of imprisonment from six months to five years, continue to arrive. Only
during last year, RDP B92's legal team filed several criminal charges for endangering the safety of employees of the media company. Criminal proceedings have been launched against some of those reported for committing these acts.
