The source also said that "according to preliminary information, he might have sent two suicide bombers to Volgograd late in December 2013."

A special operation was carried out in the town of Izberbash, where the police on Wednesday morning blocked a house where the terrorists were located.

"During the talks, one of the militants' accomplices surrendered. The rest, including Mirzayev, opened fire and were killed in a shootout," the Russian news agency quoted its source as saying.

The two terrorist attacks in Volgograd in late December resulted in the deaths of 33 people. Dozens more were wounded.
