BELGRADE Serbia’s Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic has stated that Serbia had a very good chance to get a date for the beginning of the EU negotiations. “I honestly think that we have very good chances of getting a date for the start of the EU negotiations and that they have rarely been this good,” the minister told daily Blic. “Serbia has good chance to get EU talks date” When asked what his optimism was based on, bearing in mind warnings from Germany that its elections and short deadlines for the German parliament’s positive decision could hamper the process, Mrkic said that his opinion stemmed from talks he had with foreign representatives. “A general impression in the last three months is that things are going well. We are not getting any criticism, there are no tensions and I sense good intentions and a quite good atmosphere when it comes to interlocutors that have the biggest say,” he explained. When asked if early parliamentary elections would be called if Serbia failed to get the date for the beginning of the EU accession talks, Mrkic said that nobody had discussed the issue in the government. He added that by taking part in a meeting with Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga in Brussels on Wednesday, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic would show “his support to everything other representatives of Serbia do, which shows unity of the top state officials regarding Kosovo”.
