BELGRADE Leader of the opposition LDP Cedomir Jovanovic on Monday resigned as member of the Parliament Committee for Constitutional Issues and the Judiciary. The move came after his proposal to hold a debate on the dismissal of Committee Chairman Vladimir Cvijan was not accepted. LDP leader resigns from parliament committee During the session of the committee, Jovanovic called for the LDP proposal for Cvijan's dismissal to be included in the agenda. The LDP wanted Cvija, of the ruling SNS, removed from his position over his statement concerning the president of the Supreme Court of Cassation. However the party failed to secure a necessary majority of votes in the committee. Cvijan told Tanjug previously that President of the Supreme Court of Cassation Nata Mesarovic wouldl be dismissed in late February "because the main burden of guilt for the catastrophic situation in the judiciary rests with her and because she is the main pillar of corruption". In his reaction to the statement, Jovanovic noted that it was "unacceptable for Cvijan to be chairman of the committee because he committed a grave transgression by threatening judicial officials". Noting it was strange that the charges had been filed by the party instead of the judge who was allegedly pressured, Vucic said state bodies would act on the charges filed. "If Cvijan is proven guilty, he will bear not only all legal consequences, but of course consequences inside the party as well. The same goes for anyone, and if Cvijan is proven guilty he will also be removed as committee chairman," Vucic told reporters. The DS filed criminal charges against Cvijan last week, claiming he had obstructed justice. Cvijan dismissed the allegations, while the SNS invited the Democrats to make public any evidence that anyone from the SNS had exerted pressure on the judiciary. Tanjug
