PRISTINA A KFOR spokesman has said that the number of international troops in Kosovo will not increase in the coming period. A certain number of soldiers will be relieved at the end of September, Uwe Nowitzki was quoted as saying by Tanjug. "KFOR will not bring in more troops" Nowitzki said that around 550 Italian troops who were stationed near Zubin Potok in northern Kosovo would be replaced by a German-Austrian battalion of operational reserve forces. The KFOR spokesman told Kontakt Plus radio that 5,609 international troops from 30 countries were currently deployed in Kosovo and that there would be no additional manpower. Nowitzki described the situation in the north as generally peaceful and stable, adding there was some unrest among the people, which he thought might stem from certain rumors reported by the media. Some of these rumors are that KFOR will increase the number of its troops and close all crossings in the north, both of which he denied. Nowitzki stressed that KFOR performs its task in an impartial manner, recalling that its mission is in line and stems from UN Security Council Resolution 1244, and that it will continue to assist in the preservation of a secure and peaceful environment for everyone in Kosovo.
