United Serbia (JS) deputy leader Petar Petrovic says the Socialist Party (SPS)-led coalition will continue the talks on a new government with the Democrats. He stressed that the SPS-Party of United Pensioners of Serbia (PUPS)-United Serbia (JS) coalition would continue the talks despite the results of the presidential election. SPS-led coalition "will continue talks with Democrats" “We cannot change the election results, they are what they are, the citizens went to the polls and gave their votes to the person they thought they should give their votes to,“ Petrovic told Tanjug and repeated that the SPS-PUPS-JS coaliton had supported Democratic Party (DS)-led coalition candidate Boris Tadic in the run-off. Petrovic added that Tadic had won the majority of votes in the central Serbian city of Jagodina. But the leader of the Democrats (DS) lost the second round of the presidential election to Tomislav Nikolic (SNS). “We wish to congratulate Nikolic and wish him successful work as the Serbian president but as far as the negotiations on the government are concerned, I think that there won’t be any big problems there and that the talks between the SPS-PUPS-JS coalition and the DS and someone else who will accept the SPS-PUPS-JS coalition’s program that are underway will continue,” the JS official stressed. PUPS official Momo Colakovic expressed expectation that the SPS-PUPS-JS coalition would stay united in the process of the government forming. He pointed out that their coalition agreement allowed every party to choose a partner of its own. Colakovic is convinced that a possible cohabitation between the president and the government could be successful. According to him, the leaders of the SPS-PUPS-JS coalition will meet soon in order to discuss a joint approach and they will later discuss the post-election coalition, primarily with the DS, as it was agreed earlier. The Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), led by Ivica Dacic, forged a pre-election coalition with United Serbia (JS) and the Pensioners' Party (PUPS), winning 44 seats in the May 6 parliamentary elections. The Serb Progressives (SNS) won 73 seats, while the coalition led by the Democrats (DS) will have 67 mandates. At least 126 out of 250 MPs must support a new government in order for it to be elected.
