A Belgrade newspaper writes that a former member of Justice Minister Snezana Malovic's police security had ties with a drug boss. The man was assigned to the minister's security, but was also connected to suspected drug smuggling kingpin Darko Saric, daily Blic alleges. "Drug lord's man was minister's security" Saric, a Montenegrin with a Serbian passport, is a fugitive from justice, accused in Serbia of attempting to smuggle 2.7 tons of cocaine from South America to Europe in 2008. According to the report, information about the security breach surfaced during the investigation in the cocaine smuggling case, and the security was replaced in April. The minister is now guarded by members of an elite army unit who work together with the Military-Security Agency (VBA), writes the newspaper. The article further claims that there was no material evidence to arrest the said Serbian police (MUP) officer, but that intelligence operatives learned he was working for Saric. The man now works in MUP's service in charge of security of its facilities, "where he will not have access to important police business and investigations", says Blic. An anonymous source is also quoted as saying that the the policeman suspected of working for a drug lord has been sacked "to all intents and purposes". "However, none of those who gave him the job of guarding the minister have been held to task. He must have had solid backing in order to work for Saric, and was sure that he would not come under fire inside the police. For this reason it is believed that one of his bosses knew about him working for Saric," the source concluded, Blic writes.
