Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak said that EU member-states need to make a political decision on Serbia’s further integration. “Inside the EU, there is a growing feeling that this must change, and that Serbia cannot continue to be the victim of one man and one country. This is a political decision and we must make this decision on a political level, and not hide behind one person, the chief prosecutor,” Lajcak told daily Vecernje Novosti. Lajcak: Enough hiding behind Brammertz He said that since the European Parliament has given its recommendations for Serbia's European integration, the EU Council of Ministers now must make a decision on whether Serbia’s path of integration could be unfrozen. Lajcak said that he believes that Hague Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz’s report is a very positive one. “However, the two magic words ‘full cooperation’ are missing. I am afraid that this is just repeating the same scenario, and as I already said, this situation is less and less sustainable,” Lajcak said. Asked whether he believes that Serbia could apply for EU candidate status by the end of the year, Lajcak said that he has already recommended to Serbia to not apply until it is sure that the application will be accepted and given a positive assessment, then forwarded to the European Commission. “There is no point in taking a step if we have no guarantee,” Lajcak said, adding that Slovakia strongly supports the EU enlargement process, especially in relation to the countries of the Western Balkans.
