"Politics is not EULEX’s job"

EULEX Chief Yves de Kermabon says that the EU mission’s sole purpose is to improve the rule of law for everybody living in Kosovo.

EULEX Chief Yves de Kermabon says that the EU mission’s sole purpose is to improve the rule of law for everybody living in Kosovo. "I believe that the majority of people would agree that there is a desperate need to tackle issues such as organized crime and corruption,” de Kermabon told Belgrade daily Blic on the eve of the mission’s deployment to northern Kosovo. "Politics is not EULEX’s job" "Politics is not EULEX’s job,” he said, adding that the mission’s task was not to divide Kosovo, but that independence was not an issue that EULEX would be dealing with. De Kermabon said that orders would be received from the EU, and that there was a direct chain of command from EULEX to Brussels. "However, we are working within UN Security Council Resolution 1244, and will send regular reports to the UN through Brussels,” he said. The EULEX chief said that the mission’s central element was to train, supervise and offer advice to their local colleagues. He said that it would take some time for the mission to be accepted in some areas, adding that he hoped that those objections would be expressed peacefully and democratically. In any case, de Kermabon does not envisage any problems with the EULEX deployment.
