According to the preliminary information, the fire broke out on the club’s stage and it was caused by faulty electrical wiring.

“Around 350 people were inside the club when the fire broke out. The six victims, who most likely suffocated, were trapped in the bathroom,” Novi Sad Police Administration Chief Stevan Krstić has stated.

Serbian President Boris Tadić has expressed deepest regret over the tragedy and the loss of young lives.

Novi Sad Municipal Court Investigative Judge Ana Stamenić told reporters that two of the victims have been identified so far and that investigators did not find any IDs on the other four victims.

She stressed that she could not release the names of the two identified victims but stressed that they were about 18 years old.

“Two persons were admitted to the Vojvodina Clinical Center’s Emergency Room,” Clinical Center Spokeswoman Jelena Jurišin has said.

According to the latest information, police have brought 50 people in for questioning, including the club’s owner.

Serbian Police Director Milorad Veljović came to the scene on Sunday morning and said that the preliminary investigation showed that the fire was caused by faulty wiring.

“The investigation is underway and the cause of the tragedy will be determined, just like it will be determined whether all regulations were respected and if there were any possible oversights. The club was regularly inspected and technical irregularities that could cause the fire were not noticed,” Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić has stated.

Novi Sad Mayor Igor Pavličić has said that a day of mourning will be declared in the city.
