Serbia went through another extremely cold night, to wake up to morning temperatures ranging from minus 15 to minus eight degrees centigrade. The day's highs will not go over minus five degrees, while snow continues to fall in much of the country. Big freeze continues, ice forms on large rivers This morning the situation with rivers in Serbia was described as "critical". An ice surface about half a meter thick has formed on the Ibar River, said MUP Emergency Situations chief Predrag Maric, while that being formed on the Danube is 100 kilometers long. "As far as the Danube is concerned, that's a problem for icebreakers," Maric said, and explained that his department was coordinating with the military, and the Ministry of Infrastructure. Three icebreakers are expected to be deployed from Lepenski Vir to Danube's Iron Gates gorge. The authorities are also considering safely breaking up the ice by using explosives. The government late on Sunday declared a state of emergency in the entire territory of Serbia, and Maric says that first effects of the decision are expected to be seen in the next three or four days. On Monday, machinery was sent to some endangered areas, he said, and added that while snow is expected to stop this afternoon, "ice days are coming". In the meanwhile, another person was found frozen to death. The 62-year-old died outdoors in a village near Arilje, central Serbia, and according to Maric, he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of his death. Since Orthodox Christmas on January 7, Emergency Sector officers have rescued a total of 176 persons from snowbound remote areas of the country.
