Wartime commander arrested over murder of 50 Serb prisoners

Mahmuljin is suspected of crimes committed from July to October 1995, during offensive combat operations of the Corps in the wider area Vozuca, in which the al-Mujahideen unit also participated, whose members killed around 50 prisoners of war of Serb nationality.

The prisoners of war were, as stated by the Bosnian Prosecution, previously "kidnapped from another unit of the 3rd Corps, which had captured them."

Mahmuljin is further charged with inhumane treatment of about 20 prisoners of war and civilians "whom members of the al-Mujahideen refused to hand over immediately to the military police unit in accordance with the orders," said the statement, carried by the Beta agency.

Mahmuljin, as the commander of the 3rd Corps, is also accused of failing to prevent the al-Mujahideen unit from carry out these war crimes against prisoners of war and civilians, and of failing to punish the perpetrators after they committed the crimes.

He is charged with having information that members of this unit subordinate to him were preparing to commit the crimes or had already committed them, but did nothing to prevent them and punish the perpetrators.

Mahmuljin is charged with command responsibility for the crimes committed by the members of the unit, his subordinates.

Mahmuljin, who was arrested in Sarajevo on Tuesday by the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA), is also accused of war crimes against prisoners of war, war crimes against civilians and war crimes against the wounded and sick.
