A U.S. diplomat says the arrest of war crimes fugitives is the main condition for Serbia’s EU integration. U.S. War Crimes Issues Ambassador John Clint Williamson also said that this was of utmost importance for the reconciliation in region and for its progress. U.S. official: Indications of Karadzic in Serbia The diplomat told the Sarajevo daily Oslobodjenje, that it was exceptionally important for all those charged with war crimes to be arrested, above all Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic. “It is very important that it happens before the Hague Tribunal shuts its doors. Apart from these two, there are also many others involved in war crimes,” Williamson said. He added that most recent information said that Mladic was in Serbia, and that there were “firm indications that Karadzic was also in that country”. Williamson said that the previous Serbian government had "missed many good opportunities to act in this matter” and expressed hope that “the new government will bring fundamental changes and that these two individuals will be brought to justice”. The U.S. official said that the main conditions for Serbia’s EU integration were the arrest and extradition of the Hague fugitives. He pointed out that Washington supported all ongoing investigations against those suspected of war crimes, and called for the full cooperation with a Bosnia-Herzegovina court with jurisdiction in these matters. Williamson also expressed concern because of the pressures on the Bosnian war crimes court and prosecution, adding that the judges and prosecutors in that country should do their job impartially, regardless of the outside influences. The ambassador concluded that there was “absolutely not a single one piece of evidence that there was ever an agreement between Richard Holbrooke and Karadzic, let alone with Mladic”.
