The EU officials are considering a temporary suspension of a visa-free regime for Bosnia-Herzegovina due to increased number of asylum seekers from the country. “The number of asylum seekers from Bosnia-Herzegovina has especially increased in Sweden,” EP Rapporteur for Visa Liberalization Tanja Fajon has confirmed. EU mulls suspension of Bosnia’s visa-free regime She warned that several EU member states had recently raised the question of visa-free regime suspension. “The number of asylum seekers from Bosnia-Herzegovina has in the last three weeks alone increased by 97 percent,” Fajon stressed, adding that certain EU member states believed the figures were alarming. Bosnia-Herzegovina officials, however, do not believe that the figures are so dramatic that they could endanger the country’s visa-free regime. Visa-Free Regime Monitoring Team Head Bakir Dautbasic has noted that the number of Bosnian asylum seekers has only increased in Sweden and that the situation in other countries is much better and that the number of the asylum seekers in them has not exceeded 1,000. He pointed out that Bosnia-Herzegovina was trying to solve the issue but noted, however, that countries of the region, such as Serbia and Macedonia, were facing similar problems and even had a higher number of persons seeking asylum in the EU member states. Despite the increased number of asylum seekers, sources from diplomatic circles do not believe that visas will be reintroduced for Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Macedonia. B92
