Migrants who don't manage to cross from Serbia into Hungary and are stranded "in no man's land" will be able to return to Serbia, says Aleksandar Vulin.

Minister: We won't accept migrants forced to go back

"We will not keep anybody in our territory by force, and by the same token won't accept any country forcibly, without proper legal procedures and readmission, returning anyone to our territory," Vulin told Tanjug late on Monday.

Asked "what will happen with those refugees," Vulin said that will no longer be Serbia's responsibility.

"They are in Hungary's territory and we expect the Hungarian state to treat them as it should," Vulin said.

Vulim spoke as Serbia's northern neighbor was about to introduce a package of new measures at midnight that toughened laws on border protection and migration.

From now on, Hungary will use soldiers to control its borders and criminally prosecute those crossing them illegally. Asylum applications will also be considered under a fast-track procedure.

Also speaking on Monday, a state secretary in Vulin's ministry said that Serbia will deploy soldiers to its border rather than accept refugees returned by Hungary.
