BELGRADE Branko Ruzic says the prediction that Serbia could become an EU member in 2020 "is not too optimistic, but stems from real capabilities of the country." Along that road, Serbia will need courage and pragmatism which it has already demonstrated, Serbia's minister without portfolio in charge of EU integration said at the beginning of a roundtable discussion on the issues relating to the justice and security. "2020 not too optimistic deadline for joining EU" The negotiating Chapters 23 and 24, which deal with the rule of law and security, will be a test at which Serbia will show the capability to advance in the EU integration process, Ruzic said. Referring to the issue of bogus asylum seekers, Ruzic said that Serbia took measures to drastically reduce the number of those applying for asylum in EU member states without grounds. "It would be important that, as far as Germany is concerned, we reduce the number to a sustainable level, as the motives of bogus asylum seekers are economic in nature, given that Germany provides every asylum seeker with an apartment, food for three months and EUR 800 on a monthly basis," Ruzic said. Very experienced teams of the justice and interior ministries are working on this problem, which places Serbia, when it comes to administrative capacities, at the very top taking into consideration the states that were in the similar phase of EU integration, the minister explained.
