Albanian leader in Preševo Valley calls for boycott

The party presidency added that this could cause serious problems for Serbia within the framework of its European integration.

PDD’s president Riza Halimi said the proposed constitution stems from a compromise in the parliament, without making any significant steps toward decentralization and regionalization of the state.

Halimi also said the decision to call for boycott was made in the hope of creating a more favorable parliamentary structure after the next elections, one with “more political courage to fight for all the Serbian citizens’ well-being more decisively”.

He said that his party estimates the new constitution contains more restrictive regulation than the previous one, concerning minority rights.

Halimi said that the referendum will be held under unfavorable circumstances in the Preševo Valley, which is, in his words, burdened by the police and army presence.

“The referendum will be conducted in an atmosphere of mistrust toward the Albanians from this region, evident in their removal from the municipal referendum committees, so that in Preševo, which is 93 percent Albanian, only the committee’s secretary and his deputy are Albanian”, PDD leader concluded.
