Law on Ministerial portfolios to be modified

The date of the parliamentary session dedicated to the government’s reconstruction is also still unknown. G17 Plus is demanding an extra portfolio, at the expense of the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO) which only has three MPs in the parliament, but four ministers in the government.

The G17 Plus leaders said that the new ministers will not be elected until it becomes clear whether the EU talks will resume, in other words, if the party will still take part in the government after October 1. G17 Plus parliamentary leader Miloljub Albijanić told the Blic daily that it made no sense for the new ministers to be sworn in should that party leave the government. The Democratic party of Serbia (DSS) representatives however said that a procedure will be followed, putting the issues in question before the parliament soon. “The DSS has always insisted on solving the problems or misunderstandings within the coalition via a coalition agreement. We have not and will not solve them in the media”, the DSS spokesman Andreja Mladenović said.

On the other hand the SPO representatives say that the party had won 13 seats and point out to the fact G17 Plus run on a ticket headed by Miroljub Labus, no longer a party member. “We reached a coalition agreement based on the post-election situation, and we all got as many portfolios as the agreement specified. The time and political goings-on will tell what will happen in September and October, and the SPO’s reaction will be conditioned by those developments”, Sanja Čeković explained.

The Socialist party of Serbia (SPS), several times instrumental in securing the current government’s survival, repeatedly made known its negative stance on Vuk Drašković’s election as Foreign minister. Rumors are ripe that the ruling coalition may decide to drop Drašković as the FM candidate, losing SPO parliamentary support in the process.
