Suspected drug lord Darko Saric, who is currently on the run, is hiding in Pljevlja, northern Montenegro, Belgrade daily Blic writes. According to the report, Saric - a Montenegrin with Serbian citizenship - is hiding close to his hometown, and is under the protection of "Montenegro's authorities and mafia bosses". "Fugitive drug boss hiding in Montenegro" In Serbia, Saric is wanted on charges of organizing a massive cocaine trafficking operation meant to transport 2.7 tons of drugs from South America to Europe. According to the daily, one of Saric's closest associates, Goran Skokovic, is hiding with him near Pljevlja. Serbia has recently asked Montenegro to extradite Skokovic to Belgrade. A Serbian MUP source told the newspaper that Skokovic managed to escape arrest, but that he did not leave Montenegro. "At first he hid near Berane, and it's quite possible that he has since joined Darko Saric. The Serbian police information regarding the hiding of Saric and Skokovic in Montenegro has been exchanged with the Italian Anti-Mafia Directorate." Serbian Special Prosecutor Miljko Radisavljevic said after recent operations organized with Italian counterparts that he believed Saric would be arrested soon, and extradited to Serbia, "considering that he holds a Serbian passport". Moreover, the MUP source said that "because of the hiding of Darko Saric", Montenegro's authorities have agreed to a compromise and arrested his younger brother earlier this week, on an Italian warrant. But, "a battle was fought" for that arrest to materialize, too, says the newspaper. Dusko Saric was brought in by police in Pljevlja twice. He was set free the first time, but was subsequently detained. Reacting to this article, Montenegro's police denied all allegations. A police spokeswoman said in Podgorica today that media reports that Darko Saric is hiding in Montenegro "are not true". Darko Saric (Tanjug, file)
