President: Bunjevci are neither Serbs nor Croats

Croatian President Ivo Josipović criticized Nikolić because the Cyrillic textbooks were given to "children learning the Bunjevac dialect," Beta news agency reported.

Nikolić told a press release that the authors of the textbooks "were appointed by the Bunjevac Ethnic Council."

"This is about the elective subject 'The Bunjevac Dialect with Elements of Ethnic Culture', which exists in primary schools in the Bunjevci-inhabited communities. The Bunjevac people are neither Serbs, nor Croats, but a people of their own. Serbia is grateful to have them as such," Nikolić explained.

The day before, the Croatian president described Nikolić's donation as "an improper move."

Nikolić found the Croatian president's statement "fairly understandable - considering it was made during an election campaign."

Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanović also commented to say the donation was "not exactly the most appropriate thing to do."
