In front of about 10,000 people the central celebration was held at Zagreb's main square, where Croatian state officials and EU officials said that this was "a historic day for Croatia and the EU." Celebrations as Croatia joins EU Croatian President Ivo Josipovic and Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic welcomed the assembled citizens. Before his brief address, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso spoke in Croatian to welcome Croatia to the EU. Also addressing the crownd were President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and European Parliament President Martin Schulz and President Dalia Grybauskaite of Latvia, which is taking over the six-month EU presidency from Ireland. Croatian President Ivo Josipović and Prime Minister Zoran Milanović welcomed the assembled citizens.
