BELGRADE Construction and Urban Planning Minister Velimir Ilic says the agreement with Pristina does not mean that Serbia has recognized the independence of Kosovo. "We should see what we can do without sacrificing the people," Ilic told Belgrade-based daily Vecernje novosti. “Agreement doesn’t imply recognition of Kosovo” "Serbia has not given anything by signing the Brussels agreement, and it certainly has not recognized the independence of Kosovo. The status issue remains open, and in the future, in some better circumstances, it will be possible to arrive at better solutions," he was quoted as saying. He pointed out that Serbia was in a "take it or leave it" situation and was forced to decide in such a way, adding that therefore it should take the maximum of what was realistic. Speaking about the talks on the implementation of the agreement on the normalization of relations with Pristina, Ilic said that the authorities in Belgrade and the representatives of Serb municipalities in Kosovo should jointly consider the situation and determine what Serbia could do without sacrificing its own people and the state itself. “Although Serbia is a long way from joining the EU, it is very important for investment inflow that the country gets a starting date for the EU accession talks,” he noted. "There will be no major changes in Kosovo, but we have to be organized, strong and unanimous," the minister underlined. "Serbia cannot do without foreign loans and donations and many are awaiting our surrender and bankruptcy," Ilic cautioned. He also stressed that only with a strong economy could Serbia help its people in Kosovo. "A Serbia that would be ruined and on its knees, due to the problems that may arise, is of no use to anyone," Ilic concluded. Velimir Ilic (Beta, file) Tanjug
