Minister of Agriculture and Trade Dusan Petrovic says Serbia "will not back down from Resolution 1244" when it comes to regional representation of Kosovo. The government believes this is a legitimate position, he said on Tuesday in Belgrade. He stressed the government cannot and will not go below this standard and is fully convinced this is a legitimate position. Petrovic stressed the most important thing are the lives of the people in Kosovo, because "national interests cannot be protected if there are no people in Kosovo." The minister added the government does not care only about protecting Serbs in Kosovo, "but also for (ethnic) Albanians and KFOR troops". "We want to solve the problem peacefully, without anyone losing their lives. Unfortunately, this has not been the case in past decades and centuries," Petrovic said. Talking about Serbia's chances of getting EU candidate status, Petrovic said the country has undergone crucial reforms and expressed belief this will be reflected in the European Council's decision in March or February.
