Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has proposed the EU to aside from the talks that are already underway launch new negotiations about northern Kosovo. In a letter to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule, the Swedish minister said that northern Kosovo was today more divided than ever. In the letter, that Pristina-based Albanian language daily Koha Ditore had insight to, Bildt stated that “a better approach to the Serb community in Kosovo is necessary”. The Swedish foreign minister requested a modification of the dialogue in Brussels in order to start negotiations about northern Kosovo “outside narrow technical issues”. “Progress will certainly be made in the further dialogue about the north between Pristina and Belgrade and I believe that the time has come to get moving and to go a bit farther away from narrowly defined technical issues,” he stressed. He also requested from the European Commission (EC) to launch another dialogue with Kosovo about the north of the province aside from the dialogue in Brussels, because he believes that it is necessary to devote more attention to the Serb community in Kosovo.
