The Justice Ministry will present a set of laws in October which will target corruption and reduce immunity granted to MPs, ministers, judges and prosecutors. Justice Ministry State Secretary Slobodan Homen told Tanjug that a number of laws needed changing to help the combat against corruption and that one of the most important steps in that was to reduce the immunity granted to MPs and top government officials. “Officials' immunity needs reduction” “Several laws need to be amended to achieve that,” he noted, adding that it was also important in order to harmonize Serbia's practice with that of the EU. “These are also recommendations made by international organizations,” Homen pointed out. “The experts who analyzed the law determined that immunity is too broadly interpreted in Serbia, regardless of the Constitution,” he added. “The laws that need amendments include the parliament law and rules of procedure and criminal code, because they are not in line with the Constitution,” the state secretary commented. "We think there is a way to reduce immunity without changing the Constitution, but we should not be afraid of changing it, because we need to harmonize it with European standards," Homen explained. “The basic idea is to make parliament members and top government officials equal to the people they represent and who elected them,” he concluded.
