"At present there are no clues that Serbian customs officials were in any way involved in the affair that ended in the arrest of a number of customs officers and policemen in Romania," the Serbian Customs Administration said on Thursday. Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc dismissed the head of National Customs Service after the big cigarette-smuggling scandal that ended in the arrest of a great number of customs officers and policemen who took bribes, all of whom were captured on the Serbian-Romanian border. According to latest reports, following the Wednesday mass arrest when authorities interrogated over 150 people, a total of 86 policemen and customs officers were remanded in detention on suspicion that they took bribes in exchange for turning a blind eye to cigarette-smuggling activities.
