The head of the US Strategic Command, Charles Richard, said that he is seriously concerned about the country's reduced capabilities when it comes to containing its rivals, China and Russia.

This is reported by the "Wall Street Journal". Washington has already lost the race in hypersonic weapons and now has an advantage only in the underwater fleet, writes the author of the text.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine revealed the fading power of America’s military deterrent, a fact that too few of our leaders seem willing to admit in public. So it is encouraging to hear a senior flag officer acknowledge the danger in a way that we hope is the start of a campaign to educate the American public. “This Ukraine crisis that we’re in right now, this is just the warmup,” Navy Admiral Charles Richard, commander of U.S. Strategic Command, said this week at a conference. “The big one is coming. And it isn’t going to be very long before we’re going to get tested in ways that we haven’t been tested” for “a long time.”

The conflict in Ukraine has shown that America's military deterrence capabilities are weakening, but few are willing to admit that fact publicly.

"The Ukrainian crisis we are going through is just a warm-up. Something bigger is going on, we will soon find ourselves in temptations... Based on the assessment of our strength when it comes to containing China, our ship is slowly sinking, because China realizes its capabilities in practice faster than we do. It doesn't matter how good our commanders and our horses are - we won't have enough of them. And that's the problem of the near future," said Admiral Charles Richard.

He stated that, probably, the only advantage of America now is submarines, which, however, may also disappear if the country does not solve the problems with technical servicing and does not start building new submarines.

The "Wall Street Journal" recalls that last year China tested a hypersonic rocket that flew around the globe and returned to the point from which it took off. According to the newspaper, that event completely stunned the USA. This means that potentially any American city could be at risk and the missile could not be detected.

"How we lost the hypersonic race to China and Russia deserves hearings in Congress", the paper states.

There is a risk that informing the public about the weak points of the US armed forces will encourage the opponents of the US to abuse them, but it is greater risk to maintain blind complacency - until China attacks Taiwan or takes some other actions that strongly affect the interests of the US and its allies, the author concludes.
