Lavrov: U.S. proposals in Syria "lead to dead end"

"We've been through this before. This will mean that extremists would once again have a chance to recover. I hope they will stop sparing armed men, that the United States as a serious power will use its influence on the extremists and those who control the armed people and that we will finally be able to solve the problem, fairly and, above all, taking into account the civilian population," said Lavrov .

The Russian foreign minister told a joint news conference with his Serbian counterpart late on Monday that he was not ruling out the possibility that Islamic State's attack on the Syrian city of Palmyra from Iraq's Mosul aims to divert attention from Aleppo.

The fact that Islamic State launched their offensive on Palmyra from Iraq and “apparently from Mosul” and marched through the “territories patrolled by the aircraft of the US-led coalition makes one think that - and I really hope to be wrong here - that it was orchestrated and coordinated to give a respite to those thugs, who are entrenched in eastern Aleppo,” Lavrov said in response to a question asked by RT.

Lavrov said that the U.S. has been conducting a two-faced policy towards terrorist groups in Syria from the very beginning of the Syrian crisis, as the U.S.-led coalition is fighting Islamic State but is studiously avoiding targeting another terrorist group, which is Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front, he said, according to RT.

“There is a significant number of reasons to believe that (Al-Nusra) is being spared as the most effective combat-capable force, which opposes the governmental [forces] of the ground in order to be used for overthrowing the legitimate Syrian government when the time comes,” Lavrov said.

Lavrov nevertheless "expressed his hope that the U.S. will stop exonerating the militants and confirm its commitment to the “fundamental agreement on “uncompromising struggle against terrorism," but "admitted that the talks between Russia and the U.S. on Syria are difficult."
