Reuters has also reported that Syrian troops held their fire in the hours after a UN-backed ceasefire took effect at dawn on Thursday.

People in the flashpoint provinces of Homs, Hama and Idlib, which have been under sustained shelling by President Bashar al Assad's forces over the past week, have reported that the situation has been calm since 6:00 this morning.

An activist in Damascus said the capital was also quiet, Reuters has reported.
