Serbians have celebrated the New Year according to the Julian calendar used by the Serbian Orthodox Church, known also as the Serbian, or Orthodox New Year.

There were no organized open air celebrations, but many citizens spent the night in restaurants and clubs.

In Novi Sad, several thousand people gathered at the central city square where Goran Bregovic and his band performed. Mayor Milos Vucevic wished a happy new year to those celebrating according to the Julian calendar.

4,000 people gathered in Jagodina where the town's assembly organized the celebrations, reports said. There were also organized events in Cuprija, Svilajnac, Despotovac, and Trstenik.

The new year was also celebrated in Kosovska Mitrovica, where Zeljko Joksimovic performed.

The Serbian Government's Office for Kosovo Director Marko Djuric attended, and wishing a happy new year, stressed that in Kosovo, "perhaps more than in other parts of the country, we are proud of this Serbian holiday of ours."

There was strong police presence in the town during the festivities, attended by Serb List President Slavko Simic, Deputy President of the Assembly of Kosovo Slobodan Petrovic, and other representatives of Serbs in Kosovo.
