Croatian Chamber of Economy urges for opening borders

"We appeal to those who make decisions to open the borders to freight traffic in order to prevent a disaster from striking the Croatian economy, as it is already on its knees," Josip Zaher, vice president for tourism, trade and finance at the Chamber of Economy, told a press conference in Zagreb on Tuesday.

He also appealed to Serbia not to take any rigorous measures that could do harm to both Croatian and Serbian businessmen.

According to the Indeh.hr website, Zaher said he was aware of the difficulties caused by the migrants crisis, but stressed that it was imperative to make sure businessmen were able to do business normally.

He said dozens of companies had called or emailed the Chamber of Economy warning of possible catastrophic consequences for their businesses following border closure.

If the traffic of goods between Croatia and Serbia is completely suspended, average daily losses for the Croatian economy would be around one million euros, said Zagreb-based daily Jutarnji list.

Zaher said that companies doing business with Serbia, and everyone else whose doing business was connected with Serbia, one of Croatia's prime trade partners, would suffer the most.

Zaher pointed out that Croatia exported EUR 509 million worth of goods to Serbia every year, which made it Croatia's sixth-largest trading partner in terms of exports.
