Deutsche Telekom CEO Rene Obermann might be more deeply involved in a bribery affair in Macedonia than initially thought, German magazine Der Spiegel writes. The magazine says that the state prosecution in Bonn has charged Deutsche Telekom with negotiating “some sort of a secret contract” with the Macedonian government. Deutsche Telekom CEO and Macedonian affair The contract allegedly envisaged paying millions to the government in Skopje if it made sure that a third cell phone operator did not appear in the Macedonian market. The content of the agreement was later “deleted” from several computers belonging to Deutsche Telekom officials, says the article. But according to Der Spiegel, the authorities have produced electronic messages that show that Obermann too could have been informed about the negotiations with the Macedonian government, and the state of the secret agreements. It has been claimed so far that the Deutsche Telekom CEO only said during a telephone conversation with the head of Makedonski Telekom (MakTel, Macedonian Telecom) that he would approve payments of dividends, on condition that the local telecommunications market "slowly opened" to other companies. Quoting experts of the Debevoise & Plimpton law firm, which was hired by Deutsche Telekom to work on the case, the German magazine writes that electronic messages “are not evidence” that Obermann was involved in the making of the controversial agreement or that he knew about it. Deutsche Telekom announced last weekend that there were no knew findings or new doubts by the state prosecution regarding the case, and pointed out that statements of the U.S. law firm showed that nothing indicated that Obermann had any knowledge about “a cooperation protocol”, and that “conclusions about Obermann’s criminal responsibility cannot be made”. The state prosecution in Bonn started an investigation against the Deutsche Telekom CEO and seven others for their possible involvement in corruption activities in Macedonia and Montenegro.
