Greek workers will be on the streets today, protesting against radical pension reforms aimed at improving the country’s finances. The general strike means that thousands of staff will not show up to do their jobs. It has been timed to coincide with the start of the debate on the bill, which also includes far-reaching changes to employment conditions. Greeks protest pension reforms The proposed labour rules would make it easier to fire staff and pay young people less than the minimum wage. The controversial bill will curb early retirement, raise the number of pension contribution years from 37 to 40, and raise women’s retirement age from 60, to match men’s at 65. Submitted last Friday, the bill has to be adopted by September if Greece is to meet conditions set out by the EU and IMF bailout, worth 110 billion euros. Protests in Athens (Beta/AP)
