Ivo Sanader says he believes that the pro-EU parties will triumph in Serbia’s upcoming elections. “I do not believe that the anti-European forces will be victorious. I believe that those who believe that Serbia should strive towards European integration will prevail. Croatia is prepared to help Serbia progress in this direction,” the Croatian prime minister told the Reuters news agency. Sanader: Pro-EU forces will prevail in Serbia Sanader stated that despite the tensions tied to recognition of Kosovo’s unilateral independence declaration, there should be no significant problems expected in the Balkans, which had been gripped by war and instability over the past two decades. The Croatian prime minister said that Croatia would like to be an example to the other countries of the region, and that the invitation to join NATO, which it expected to receive at the coming summit in Bucharest, was proof that “Croatia is on the right path.” “I expect to receive the invitation next week. That shows that we have already done a lot to adopt NATO values, which include democratic standards, the rule of law, respect for human rights and a functional market economy,” he explained. Sanader said that NATO membership would also help Croatia on its path to the EU, because the majority of EU members had taken their first step by joining the military alliance. The prime minister said that Croatia would start the final and most difficult phase of negotiations with the EU in three months time, as had been planned earlier. The European Commission confirmed this month that Croatia could complete negotiations for EU entry by October 2009, which would enable it to become a member in early 2011, if all the key reforms were implemented. Croatia is expected to present its plan for judicial reform by June and begin implementing measures for cracking down on corruption.
