BRUSSELS Serbia has received assurances from EULEX that it was not behind "a supposed statement of the EULEX chief of customs", says Aleksandar Vulin. The media reported earlier in the day that Serbs from northern Kosovo were told during a meeting at Jarinje that they "must pay customs fees or face minor and then criminal charges". Officials told "EULEX was not behind customs statement" According to reports, the local business community was also told that this may change "in negotiations between presidents of governments of Serbia and Kosovo". The Serbs were also advised to "wait for the outcome of the talks between Ivica Dacic and Catherine Ashton in Brussels" on Friday. But head of the government office for Kosovo Aleksandar Vulin said on Friday in Brussels that the EU mission in the province, EULEX, was "a status neutral organization and all activities outside of that framework led to breaches of the Integrated Border Management agreement and its potential suspension by the Serbian government". "The government will monitor further events carefully and react accordingly," Vulin said, stressing that the provisions of an agreement reached by Ivica Dacic and Hashim Thaci earlier this month had to be respected. According to the agreement reached in the presence of Catherine Ashton, customs fees would not be paid on goods destined for the Serb-dominated north. "I hope the agreement will not be suspended and that, according to today's agreement in Brussels, all issues will be settled when technical groups meet on Monday," said Vulin, who attended a meeting on Friday between Prime Minister Ivica Dacic and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton.
