Food supplies have started to arrive again to northern Kosovo after Jarinje and Brnjak administrative line checkpoints were opened for traffic on Sunday. Beta news agency said that vans were bringing bread, milk, and newspapers to Kosovska Mitrovica, Leposavic and Lesak this morning from the town of Raska. Food supplies start arriving in Serb north Passenger cars, vans and buses are allowed across the checkpoints, but not trucks. The vehicles stop briefly for routine checks before being let through. In Belgrade, the Serbian government in meeting for a telephone conference today to send food and other supplies from the state reserves. Two Red Cross trucks carrying goods to the Serbs in northern Kosovo entered the territory via Jarinje today. Agriculture Minister Dusan Petrovic said in Belgrade that several dozen tons of basic food items will be sent to the province. "This is one measure of assistance to help people there survive these difficult moments," Petrovic said. His message was that the state will not allow for residents in the north to run out of bread, milk, cooking oil and other food. "I expect political agreements to be reached and that we will, step by step, return to the relatively normal condition related to this problem," the minister concluded. Jarinje and Brnjak reopened on Sunday after the NATO-led troops in the province, KFOR, shut them down completely. Serbs in the north warned that they would face a humanitarian disaster, with shortages of food and medical supplies looming. (Beta)
