The first meeting between Belgrade and Pristina teams in New York went in an open atmosphere, Wolfgang Ischinger says. The EU diplomat in the Contact Group Troika was in Brussels Friday to sumbit a report to the European Political and Security Committee, when he said that the mediators hoped they might be able to lead the two sides to approach the Kosovo talks in a more creative manner, once they meet again on October 14. Ischinger sees "progress in atmosphere" The EU Council of Ministers sources suggest that Ischinger said there is reason for a "somewhat better feel" when it comes to the negotiations over the province's future status, so far held in three rounds, in Vienna, London, and New York. But the German diplomat said the two sides held on to their unchanged positions, where Belgrade offered its essential autonomy solution, while the ethnic Albanian side persisted in advocating "cooperation between two independent states." The Troika is resolute to use the remaining time until December 10 to "explore all possibilities for a compromise," a statement from the committee said Friday, while the New York Declaration, adopted last week, also urged an agreement reached though negotiations, as a guarantee of regional stability.
