Tadić, regional counterparts attend military exercise

At the triple border point between Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia on the Danube River near Đerdap, the main part of the exercise was held on June 27, in the presence of the presidents, defense ministers, military and police chiefs.

The preparatory exercise of the national bodies for crisis management demonstrated joint combat against terrorism, the prevention of environmental accidents and intervention in crisis situations caused by elementary disasters.

More than 1,600 soldiers, policemen and members of the three countries' civilian services are taking part in the Danube Guard 2007, which began on June 25 and will last until June 29.

Bulgaria has 360 participants, Romania about 700 and Serbia 550.

President Boris Tadić said at a news conference that it was necessary to demonstrate the "defense capacities of the three states that share one living space, similar interests and have a high level of solidarity and, perhaps, the best relations in history."

Bulgarian President Georgi Prvanov said he was pleased with the efficiency and cooperation in the security sector, and also said that the exercise demonstrated the high degree of trust among the three countries.

Romanian President Traian Basescu pointed out that the exercise had shown that security was one of the priorities in the region. He also underlined the high degree of mutual trust.

On June 27, presidents Tadić and Prvanov also signed an agreement on opening two border crossings between Serbia and Bulgaria.
