Goran Hadzic released, arrives in Serbia

Hadzic was last November diagnosed with brain cancer that his defense team said is in the final phase.

Half an hour after midnight, a police car transported him from the Belgrade airport to his home in Novi Sad.

During his stay in Serbia, the former political leader of Serbs in Croatia is not allowed to leave Novi Sad and go out of his home at night. He is also prohibited from contacting any of the victims, witnesses or anyone else related to his case, apart from his lawyer.

The Serbian government is responsible for his safety and should arrest him immediately if he violates any of the conditions of his release, that will end in May. The exact date is "confidential information," the court announced.

Hadzic is accused of crimes against humanity and violations of the rules and customs of war in Croatia 1991-1995.
