A Scotland Yard investigation claims a criminal of Serbian descent from the West Midlands killed BBC journalist Jill Dando in April 1999, says the Sunday Times. In an article headlined “Serb admits killing Jill Dando,” the newspaper says that the alleged killer boasted to friends in a Belgrade café in 2001 that he had killed the then television star. The murder was allegedly an act of revenge for the NATO bombing of Belgrade and his confession was reportedly heard by about ten people. Sunday Times: Serb killed British journalist One of the witnesses to the reported café confession, a British businessman, said that it was not clear whether the suspect said he had killed Dando, or that he knew who had killed her, writes the Sunday Times. Several reported witnesses called a special British police hotline, which reopened the entire case after British Barry George was acquitted for the murder due to lack of evidence. Dando was killed by a gunshot to the head, which at one time led the police to conclude that her murderer was a professional hitman, says the BBC. George’s lawyer claimed that the bullet which killed Dando bore the markings of Yugoslav ammunition, and that the murder, committed after the bombing of public broadcaster RTS, was ordered by Zeljko Raznatovic Arkan. Media outlets in London earlier speculated that the murderer was from Serbia and that he was connected to Arkan.
