General Motors’ management team are considering the possibility of manufacturing cars in Kragujevac, writes daily Novosti. The company earlier signed a contract for technical cooperation with Zastava to assemble the Opel Astra Classic within the Kragujevac plant. GM considering Kragujevac move That job is “on ice” though until talks with Fiat are wrapped up. Novosti understands that Fiat’s management is exclusive—they do not want Opel models to be manufactured at Zastava, regardless of the Kragujevac outfit’s contractual obligations. The paper adds that it is unlikely that Opel would move its production to the Special Vehicle factory in Sombor, as the technical possibilities for this are not in place. General Motors is also interested in Kragujevac because the city will receive the status of a duty free zone, and it also has a trained workforce. For these reasons, it is considering construction of a smaller factory in the suburbs of Kragujevac, writes the daily.
