Ten years since Milošević’s “Counter Rally“

The Socialists (SPS) decided to organize a rally of their own on December 24, 1996, in downtown Belgrade, at the exact location where for over a month tens of thousands of opposition protesters gathered, as was seen as a deliberate attempt to provoke confrontation.

“Zajedno” (“Together”) coalition supporters rallied day-in day-out in Belgrade and all other major Serbian towns, protesting the fact opposition victories in the race for many municipal and town halls, Belgrade included, were annulled by the regime.

In the violence between the regime and opposition supporters that followed the so-called Counter Rally, opposition activist  Predrag Starčević was beaten to death, while Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO) member Ivica Lazović sustained grave injuries. Many more were wounded on both sides.
