Mayor dissatisfied with extension of detention

Rakić urged for acceptance of the Serbian government's guarantees that Ivanović will be available to the judiciary throughout his trial, and the permission that he be allowed to spend the next two months in house detention or be transferred to a detention unit in northern Kosovska Mitrovica.

"There is no valid reason for such a decision, as there is no danger that he might influence witnesses and no risk of flight, as EULEX Spokesperson Irina Gudeljevic said on Thursday," the mayor's office quotes Rakić as saying.

The pre-trial judge of the Basic Court in Kosovska Mitrovica ordered on Thursday the extension of detention of Oliver Ivanović for two months.

The GI SDP leader and candidate for mayor of northern Kosovska Mitrovica in the February 23 elections has been in detention since January 27.

He was arrested on suspicion of involvement in an alleged war crime in 1999 and post-war incidents in 2000, including an aggravated murder, and for inciting to ethnically motivated murder.

Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic protested Ivanović's arrest in the strongest of terms before the UN Security Council on February 10.
