Serbia's FM Vuk Jeremic told an Austrian magazine that it was "hard to imagine" Serbs would be forced to choose between EU membership and Kosovo. He told Vienna's profil magazine that EU membership was Serbia's most important goal, and that some EU states did not accept Kosovo as independent. "Serbia has no 'EU or Kosovo' dilemma" If such a dilemma were to be posed, said he, it would have "destructive consequences for the stability of the Balkans". Asked whether his statement constituted a "threat", Jeremic answered, "no", and stressed that relations between the Western Balkans countries "have never been better since the breakup of the former Yugoslavia". "I'm not saying there would be new conflicts, but putting us before such a choice would block the peace process. The situation in the Balkans could destabilize," said Jeremic. Kosovo's ethnic Albanians unilaterally declared independence three years ago, something that was rejected by Belgrade as an illegal act of secession. Speaking for the Austrian magazine, the foreign minister also touched on the subject of the Hague cooperation, to say that the extradition of General Ratko Mladic was not a political, but rather "purely an issue of logistics". "Our engagement on this issue and our close cooperation with the Hague is unquestionable. Serbia is doing all it can to have Mladic arrested." Jeremic also commented on Serbia's presence at last years Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. "To us, the Nobel Peace Prize lost its credibility when Finn Martti Ahtisaari, who brought the declaration of independence of Kosovo, won it," said the minister, and explained: "To us, that prize no longer has the same value". Jeremic also expressed his doubt as to whether Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo was worthy to receive it. "When someone who is an enemy of the Chinese state wins this award, then the opposite is true: that China does not advocate peace in the world. We believe that China is a big promoter of peace," concluded the Serbian foreign minister. Vuk Jeremic (Tanjug, file)
