Serbia's goal is to start negotiations on the EU membership in a year, Serbian President Boris Tadic said. He added that Serbia would not be hindered on the EU integration path for its insufficient cooperation with the Hague Tribunal. “Serbia’s goal – EU negotiations next year” "Our goal is to reach the beginning of the EU membership talks in a year. Although we should not worry about formal deadlines, but rather concrete work, I am certain that we can meet them," Tadic said in an interview for the Belgrade-based daily Blic. He said that many things have changed in only two years, and expressed belief that a new climate was being created and that in a year and a half, that is in March or April 2012 when Serbia is to get a date for the beginning of talks on the EU membership, we will be able to make another step forward. Tadic reiterated that if Hague fugitive Ratko Mladic was in reach of the security bodies in Serbia, he would be arrested, then again if he was not in the country, Serbia would continue to cooperate with all security services in the world in order to arrest him. The issue will get detangled very soon, he added. When asked whether the next report of Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz will be worse given that he has requested for more results and pointed out that the urgent arrest of Mladic is extremely important, the president responded that Brammertz did not say that it was exclusively Mladic's arrest that represented full cooperation with the ICTY. Asked when and under which conditions he could meet with Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, he responded that he could confer with him anytime, particularly now when the UN have verified that the dialogue was necessary. However, the chief purpose is not to confer with Thaci, but to resolve the problem. The question arises whether our meeting would solve anything or we need a previous dialogue between experts who would develop mutually acceptable models, Tadic stressed. He said that the meeting was possible, provided the law and institutions which he represented were observed. "Therefore, a modus has to be found according to which Serbia does not recognize the independence of Kosovo, either explicitly or implicitly, and which opens possibilities for settlement of all open issues," the Serbia president underlined.
