Despite problems with the Lisbon Treaty and the economic crisis, the EU is determined to support Serbia’s European future, Olli Rehn said. The EU enlargement commissioner told daily Vecernje Novosti that he believes the European Commission will soon be able to recommend a liberalization of the visa regime for Serbia, but recommended to the Serbian government that it should apply for EU membership once all conditions have been met, which means that the SAA must take effect first. Rehn: First SAA, then application “For Serbia, the next step will be to implement the trade regulations from the SAA. For this to happen, there must be full cooperation achieved with the International Court in The Hague and a positive evaluation must be given. The EU can evaluate the application for membership only if the road map for the implementation of the application is complete,” Rehn said. The European Commissioner said that the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty is "a true priority of the EU", but that this does not mean there will not be any work towards the stability and progress of the Western Balkans. Rehn added that the EU is still dedicated to the European future of Serbia.
