Rehn: Serbia could become EU candidate in 2008

“And in the light of that, achieving candidate status in 2008 is ambitious, but under the best circumstances it can be possible,” Rehn told reporters after a meeting with president Boris Tadić in Brussels.

However, the EU commissioner also warned that the resumption of SAA talks ”depends mostly on the new government of Serbia.”

Rehn said that concluding talks on closer would require “concrete and convincing actions (by Belgrade) that must lead to full cooperation” with the international war crimes court in The Hague.

The EU froze talks the agreement with Serbia last May because of Belgrade's failure to arrest Bosnian Serb wartime leader Ratko Mladić and other war crimes suspects and deliver them the tribunal.

EU foreign ministers last month agreed to offer Serbia the chance for an early resumption of talks on EU accession, seen as a bid to ease the blow of a United Nations plan that would set Kosovo on the road to independence.
