Analyst: Putin holds the key

“It’s impossible to guess with certainty Russia’s final position at this point”, Judah added.

He reminds that Russia has gradually moved to a hard line attitude over Kosovo.

“However, no one knows exactly whether such an attitude reflects Russia’s genuine principles, or whether Russia is in effect set to bargain by raising the price of its approval in return for certain concessions”, Judah argued.

“All people dealing with this issue unanimously think that the statements of some Russian ministers shouldn’t be taken for granted. The only standpoint that matters is that of Vladimir Putin”, Judah said adding that the G8 summit due to take place in this summer should offer clearer perspective.

The G8 summit will host U.S. President George Bush, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Many believe their meeting will result in an agreement on Kosovo’s future, Judah concluded.
