Pope Benedict XVI is not planning to visit Serbia next year for the 1,700th anniversary of the Edict of Milan, Holy See Spokesman Federico Lombardi has said. The Belgrade-based Religious Information Agency (VIA) reported that Lombardi said that the contacts with the Serbian Orthodox Patriarchate included Pope's possible visit to the southern Serbian city of Nis. Pope not planning to visit Serbia, Vatican says Nis is the birthplace of Roman Emperor Constantine, who issued the Edict of Milan in 311, proclaiming religious toleration in the Roman Empire. “However, this idea was not put into effect,” Lombardi said, adding that the Pope was invited to visit Serbia by Boris Tadic, who recently stepped down as president. Italy's news agency ANSA reported Lombardi's statement that Pope's visit to Serbia in 2013 is not planned. Radio Vatican also aired the information. Pope Benedict XVI Tanjug
