Montenegro's move modeled after Canada In this case, Montenegro followed Canada's model and that is excellent, Morrison told the Podgorica-based daily Pobjeda. He noted that Canada has carried out a similar program which brought forth great results, and added that Montenegro can expect the same. Montenegro's government initiated the economic citizenship program which enables foreigners citizen to obtain Montenegrin citizenship provided they invest at least EUR 500,000 in the country. The Canadian diplomat said that worries about the origin of the future investors' capital are unfounded, since Montenegro will follow Canada's example and establish special agencies which will run background checks on the capital. The German Christian Socialist Union (CSU), a small fraction of the ruling coalition of Chancellor Angela Merkel, has requested introduction of Schengen visas to Montenegro because of this initiative. The Montenegrin opposition showed major reserve concerning this program, as they believe that the initiative would not contribute to growth of foreign investments and that the country could become an El Dorado for criminals and corrupted politicians from around the world. The Montenegrin government denied that the citizenship might be granted to someone whose credibility or origin of capital could come into question, and announced triple checks.
